Interior Design Deepdive: The “Old Money” Aesthetic.

If you’re new to the term “Old Money” aesthetic, you certainly won’t be new to the aspect itself. Old Money recently has been a theme surrounding certain fashion and home trends. The goal is to show off refined taste and wealth without being flashy about it. So, think, classic tones, neutrals, pops of rich colours, lots of gold accents and the odd designer statements.
Although a new term now with the age of social media, “Old Money” aesthetic was at its highest in the 90s. Portaire states that it is inspired by 90s ads, the Kennedy’s, and Ralph Lauren’s signature style…it’s all about subtly displaying luxury and privilege.
So, let’s take a look at what “Old Money” could look like in the home:
Quality over Quantity:
Investing in quality items that stand the test of time. Think, custom made tables and made to measure curtains. These types of furnishings offer uniqueness to your home. They are one of one, a custom piece to your home that will last. Think of them as investments, something to pass onto generations of your family, which is exactly what “Old Money” aesthetic is all about.
It’s Antique Darling:
Antiques are gorgeous additions to any home. Statement antique pieces can really tie in a room whether it’s a baroque framed mirror, a small collection of antique books with a statement book end, or just a small gold desk clock for the #vintagevibes. Embrace the older styles!
Space for Days:
Don’t be afraid to have empty areas of your home. For example, one smaller statement table with a couple of books and a candle in the hallway is all you need, lose the coat hangers, and instead opt for internal storage for coats and hats. Allowing a room to be non-functional sometimes can make such a difference in how your home feels.
A Neutral moment:
Forget the diamonds! Neutrals are a girl’s best friend. Whether that’s beige, white or cream, all these neutral tones are an essential part of an “Old Money” aesthetic. Linen, Cotton, and Wool, all natural materials that are rich in texture. Neutrals are not boring when they’re accompanied by pops of subtle colour, a gold accent, and some fresh, colourful flowers.
Subtlety is a fine art:
The “Old Money” aesthetic leans more into refined art, rich textiles, and neutral colour palettes that create a clean and sophisticated environment. Meaning, small details go a long way. Why not opt for handmade and artisanal candles, pottery, and accessories in your home to add a touch of luxury.
Coastal accents:
We’re not talking two giant interlocking canoe paddles above the mantel (although we’re sure that would look amazing), but more coastal hints in furniture pieces. Navy and white being the staple, that paired with vertical stripes – but remember, less is more for “Old Money” aesthetic, so subtle hints of navy, striped and nautical themed décor in small doses.

All in all, the “Old Money” aesthetic is a timeless staple of interior design. It’s not a new style however, nor does it seem to ever really be going out of fashion.
